故事围绕1968年6月6日美国参议员罗伯特·F·肯尼迪的遇刺展开，那颗致命的子弹不但要了鲍比的性命，也令当时身处“大使酒店”的22个人的命运发生了转变，更进一步说，这颗子弹消灭了整个美国的纯真……
　　
　　 在由埃米里奥·埃丝泰威兹导演并担纲主演的这部戏中，22个人成为了二十世纪六十年代悲剧性、决定性的一幕的不知情的见证人。故事发生在1968年6月初，加利福尼亚，总统选举的初选成为许多“金州”人津津乐道的话题，而罗伯特·F·肯尼迪与尤金·麦卡锡和休伯特·汉弗莱之间的竞争正是如火如荼。肯尼迪的竞选团队将大本营设在了洛杉矶的“大使酒店”，当遇刺身亡的总统约翰·F·肯尼迪的兄弟也朝着相同的命运进发时，酒店的职员和房客们就成为了这一事件的见证人。保罗是大使酒店的经理，他的妻子Miriam是酒店美容院的发型师。Angela是酒店总机的接线员，她背着Miriam与Paul偷情。Timmons负责酒店的餐厅和餐饮部，从来不掩饰自己对于手下的非裔美国人和拉美人的厌恶。Miguel和Jose是两个在厨房工作的年轻墨西哥裔美国人，他们憎恶Timmons，而Robinson是一个上了年纪的黑人，经常对于他们的过激情绪给予劝告。Virginia Fallon是酒店酒吧的歌手，有着严重的酒精依赖；她的丈夫Tim是肯尼迪的支持者，也是她的经理人，对于处理她的麻烦已经快要忍无可忍了。William是一个不顾一切地想要逃避兵役、尤其是不想被派往越南的年轻人，而Diane是一个年轻漂亮的女人，她在与William的兄弟约会，但却答应嫁给William以便让他能逃兵役，但是很显然William非常迷恋她，而她以为这只是一场有名无实的婚姻。John Casey是大使酒店的所有者之一，Nelson是在酒店工作的一个老朋友。Jack是个有钱人、肯尼迪竞选活动的赞助者之一，他娶了年龄远远小于他、非常有魅力的Samantha为妻。《鲍比》还塑造了Joshua Jackson，Nick Cannon和Shia LaBeouf等人物，他们都是肯尼迪竞选活动的年轻志愿者，还有Ashton Kutcher，Joy Bryant，Kip Pardue和Mary Elizabeth Winstead，他们全都是肯尼迪的支持者。
