I'm struggling to see why this was such a breakout hit. The first film was basically a big disaster movie with solid but not overwhelming spectacle. The short story which it's based on is good with some great evocative scenes...and,of course, it looks like neither the original nor the prequel will actually adapt them.Probably because of national pride that they felt China finally able to produce a bombastic disaster movie with Hollywood standard, technically

I want to watch it too.First one was kinda goofy, but it has its moments.

AGOTFAN

I had so much expectations for the first one, and then I watched on Netflix, kinda disappointed. Maybe should have watched it on cinema.

mgrier123

I saw the first one in theaters and my friends and I whooped and cheered when the one guy shot his minigun at Jupiter. It was so much fun but incredibly stupid. Excited to see this one.

I'm also a big fan of the first one.Really need to try reading the books again, I bought them in Chinese but I'm still working on getting my reading level up enough so I don't have to use Translate every 10 seconds in order to understand the plot.

I don't think you can adapt a Liu Cixin book and not have it either be two hours of shots of people in lab coats describing things they're looking at off screen, or through some scientific instrument, or either super goofy and over the top. I'm glad they went with the goofy route."Let's ignite Jupiter" had me laughing out loud, I'll be sure to watch the sequel

jordantan29

For me the best one is House of Flying Daggers. Easily the most visually beautiful motion picture ever made.

Chinese cinema is a long way from returning to its golden days.Late 90s and early 00s was definitely the peak, with films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero.

AnAffinityForTurtles

I don't really watch a lot of Chinese cinema but I'm sure there are gems we don't hear about

LimLovesDonuts

I’m not from China and even I want to see it lol.I liked the first one a lot.

dexed

to mention, the trailer looks good, and the movie concept is also so different, it's worth to watch.

AbstractBettaFish

This looks suspiciously like the end of Ace Combat 7

Darkhawk246

I thought I was on the wrong subreddit when I first saw it

abcpdo

having seen the movie today, it absolutely is like the end of Ace Combat 7... and that's just the first third of the movie.

xxm4tt

The sci-fi stuff is more credible than a functioning Su-57 doing anything important

zyx1989

The whole idea behind "wandering earth" is even less credible than the poster

ArgumentativeNerfer

What, you mean that attaching giant engines to the Earth and sending it flying through space away from the sun is NOT a credible idea?

Magnificored

The author of the short fiction this film is based on prefers a "fond love of the earth" spirit of humanity in the story, which resonates with the characteristically Chinese "fond love of home and family", though undeniably a spaceship escapist plot will be more feasible when humans have the technology to build some "planetary engines" to move earth around.

SamtheCossack

Honestly, doesn't sound dramatically ahead of hollywood in non-credibility.I mean we have movies with F-35s losing gunfights with large apes and lizards, so a J-20 strafing Jupiter sounds about right.

Agent_of_talon

I swear, the Chinese film industry is just adapting the worst aspects of American-style blockbusters and just put their own national spin on it. Remember "Wolf Warrior"? There’s not really much artistic and challenging subject matter in their movies, beyond just tons of bombastic CGI-action.

twiloph

I'm curious to see what the plot is

Avaline00

So in the distant future, the sun is going to start expanding. So in order to save the planet, they put a ton of heavy-fusion engines on one half of the planet to move it into a different solar system.

Stuff goes wrong going past Jupiter leading to it being at risk of getting sucked in. The engines get extinguished so MC has to turn it back on with a big ignition core. They end up saving the planet by using one of the torque engines on the equator to blow up Jupiter which is mostly hydrogen, now mixed with earths atmosphere

TBH, I liked the movie. Then again I’m usually not that critical. It has some cool action and the ending involves every team on the planet joining together to save the world (I’m a sucker for multi-national stuff like that)
